The table illustrates the average ownership of three major durable consumer goods per 100 households in China from 2014 to 2023. Air-conditioners soared from 75.2 to 145.9 units, refrigerators rose from 85.5 to 103.4, while washing machines increased modestly from 83.7 to 98.2.
The data clearly indicate that living standards have improved substantially over the past decade. Rapid urbanization, rising disposable incomes and government efforts to expand domestic consumption have enabled more families to afford modern appliances. Air-conditioners, in particular, have become almost ubiquitous, reflecting both climate needs and a desire for greater comfort.
This trend is encouraging, yet it also raises concerns. Higher ownership of energy-consuming devices may increase electricity demand and carbon emissions. Therefore, while celebrating material progress, we should promote energy-efficient models and green consumption habits.
