Dear Paul,
I’m glad you found those handwritten letters touching. They were written by ordinary Chinese families during the 1980s and 1990s, when long-distance calls were still a luxury. Parents, children and couples poured their daily joys, worries and hopes onto paper, so each letter is a tiny time capsule of that era.
A selection of about 200 letters is now on display at the National Museum of China in Beijing until the end of next month. Admission is free if you book online in advance. If you happen to visit, I’d be happy to go with you and translate a few of them.
Looking forward to seeing you here.
Yours,
Li Ming
The charts illustrate a survey on the acceptance of elderly-care robots. A considerable proportion of respondents are willing to use them: 39.3% fully accept, while 33.8% partially accept, leaving only 27.9% opposed. In terms of concerns, safety dominates at 46.30%, followed by price at 24.90% and convenience at 10.70%. Overall, public acceptance is relatively high, but safety remains the primary worry.
The growing demand is largely driven by an aging population and the widening gap in care services. Robots can help with daily assistance, monitoring, and companionship, especially where family support is insufficient. However, their wider adoption depends on clarifying boundaries. Questions about safety responsibility, privacy protection, and the limits of emotional companionship still need careful discussion. Price is also important, because affordable devices will determine how quickly such technology reaches ordinary families.
In my view, technology should serve the elderly with safety as the bottom line and human care as the standard. Developers, families, and policymakers should work together to establish clear rules, protect users’ rights, and ensure that robots complement rather than replace genuine human warmth.
