Happy people work differently. They’re more productive, more creative, and willing to take greater risks. And new research suggests that happiness might influence __1__ firms work, too.

Companies located in places with happier people invest more, according to a recent research paper. __2__, firms in happy places spend more on R&D (research and development). That’s because happiness is linked to the kind of longer-term thinking __3__ for making investments for the future.

The researchers wanted to know if the __4__ and inclination for risk-taking that come with happiness would __5__ the way companies invested. So they compared U.S. cities’ average happiness __6__ by Gallup polling with the investment activity of publicly traded firms in those areas.

__7__ enough, firms’ investment and R&D intensity were correlated with the happiness of the area in which they were __8__. But is it really happiness that’s linked to investment, or could something else about happier cities __9__ why firms there spend more on R&D? To find out, the researchers controlled for various __10__ that might make firms more likely to invest – like size, industry, and sales – and for indicators that a place was __11__ to live in, like growth in wages or population. The link between happiness and investment generally __12__ even after accounting for these things.

The correlation between happiness and investment was particularly strong for younger firms, which the authors __13__ to “less codified decision making process” and the possible presence of “younger and less __14__ managers who are more likely to be influenced by sentiment.” The relationship was __15__ stronger in places where happiness was spread more __16__. Firms seem to invest more in places where most people are relatively happy, rather than in places with happiness inequality.

__17__ this doesn’t prove that happiness causes firms to invest more or to take a longer-term view, the authors believe it at least __18__ at that possibility. It’s not hard to imagine that local culture and sentiment would help __19__ how executives think about the future. “It surely seems plausible that happy people would be more forward-thinking and creative and __20__ R&D more than the average,” said one researcher.

    • A. why
    • B. how
    • C. where
    • D. when

    答案B

    解析原文写 happiness might influence “how firms work”,即幸福也会影响企业运作方式。 why 问原因、where 问地点、when 问时间,均无法与 work 构成通顺语义。

    • A. In return
    • B. In particular
    • C. In contrast
    • D. In conclusion

In particular(尤其、特别是)衔接概括与例证。In return 表回报、In contrast 表对比、In conclusion 表收束,均与前后递进关系不符。

    • A. necessary
    • B. famous
    • C. perfect
    • D. sufficient

    答案A

    解析原文 “longer-term thinking ___ for making investments for the future”,necessary for 表示“对未来投资所必需的长远思维”。

    • A. individualism
    • B. realism
    • C. optimism
    • D. modernism

    • A. miss
    • B. echo
    • C. spoil
    • D. change

    • A. imagined
    • B. measured
    • C. assumed
    • D. invented

    答案B

    解析城市幸福感由盖洛普民调 measured(测得)。

    • A. Sure
    • B. Odd
    • C. Unfortunate
    • D. Often

    答案A

    • A. divided
    • B. advertised
    • C. overtaxed
    • D. headquartered

    • A. summarize
    • B. overstate
    • C. explain
    • D. emphasize

    • A. factors
    • B. stages
    • C. levels
    • D. methods

    答案A

    • A. desirable
    • B. sociable
    • C. reliable
    • D. reputable

    答案A

    • A. resumed
    • B. emerged
    • C. held
    • D. broke

    • A. assign
    • B. attribute
    • C. transfer
    • D. compare

attribute A to B 表归因。

    • A. serious
    • B. civilized
    • C. ambitious
    • D. experienced

    • A. instead
    • B. thus
    • C. also
    • D. never

    • A. rapidly
    • B. directly
    • C. regularly
    • D. equally

    • A. While
    • B. Until
    • C. After
    • D. Since

    答案A

    解析While this doesn’t prove

    • A. arrives
    • B. jumps
    • C. hints
    • D. strikes

    答案C

    • A. share
    • B. rediscover
    • C. simplify
    • D. shape

    答案D

    • A. pray for
    • B. lean towards
    • C. send out
    • D. give away

pray for、send out、give away
