People have speculated for centuries about a future without work. Today is no different, with academics, writers, and activists once again __1__ that technology is replacing human workers. Some imagine that the coming work-free world will be defined by __2__: A few wealthy people will own all the capital, and the masses will struggle in an impoverished wasteland.
A different and not mutually exclusive __3__ holds that the future will be a wasteland of a different sort, one __4__ by purposelessness: Without jobs to give their lives __5__, people will simply become lazy and depressed. __6__, today’s unemployed don’t seem to be having a great time. One Gallup poll found that 20 percent of Americans who have been unemployed for at least a year report having depression, double the rate for __7__ Americans. Also, some research suggests that the __8__ for rising rates of mortality, mental-health problems, and addiction __9__ poorly-educated, middle-aged people is a shortage of well-paid jobs. Perhaps this is why many __10__ the agonizing dullness of a jobless future.
But it doesn’t __11__ follow from findings like these that a world without work would be filled with unease. Such visions are based on the __12__ of being unemployed in a society built on the concept of employment. In the __13__ of work, a society designed with other ends in mind could __14__ strikingly different circumstances for the future of labor and leisure. Today, the __15__ of work may be a bit overblown. “Many jobs are boring, degrading, unhealthy, and a waste of human potential,” says John Danaher, a lecturer at the National University of Ireland in Galway.
These days, because leisure time is relatively __16__ for most workers, people use their free time to counterbalance the intellectual and emotional __17__ of their jobs. “When I come home from a hard day’s work, I often feel __18__,” Danaher says, adding, “In a world in which I don’t have to work, I might feel rather different” – perhaps different enough to throw himself __19__ a hobby or a passion project with the intensity usually reserved for __20__ matters.
答案C
解析原文写学者作家活动家“once again __ that technology is replacing human workers”,对技术取代工人的忧虑应选warning。
答案A
解析后文“A few wealthy people will own all the capital, and the masses will struggle”描述贫富分化,故填inequality。
解析前文是对无工作世界的一种想象,此处“A different and not mutually exclusive __”再提另一种看法,prediction(预测)最贴。
答案A
解析“a wasteland of a different sort, one __ by purposelessness”需“以无目的性为特征”,characterized by为固定搭配。
解析“Without jobs to give their lives __”工作赋予生活意义,meaning最准。
解析“double the rate for __ Americans”对比对象是仍在工作的美国人,working。
答案A
解析“the __ for rising rates of mortality... is a shortage of well-paid jobs”短缺工作是死亡率等问题的解释,explanation。
under在…
解析“many __ the agonizing dullness of a jobless future”人们对无业未来的乏味感到担忧,worry about。leave behind抛下、make up编造、set aside搁置,均无“忧虑”义。
答案C
解析“it doesn’t __ follow... that a world without work would be filled with unease”并非必然推出无工作世界充满不安,necessarily。
解析这些想象基于“being unemployed in a society built on employment”的负面,即失业的downsides。
答案A
解析“In the __ of work”对应无工作状态,absence。
解析“the __ of work may be a bit overblown”后文引“许多工作无聊有辱人格”,故工作的美德被夸大,virtue。
解析“leisure time is relatively __ for most workers”闲暇相对稀缺,人们才用它平衡工作,scarce。
答案A
解析“When I come home from a hard day’s work, I often feel __”累了一天回家应是tired。ignored被忽视、confused困惑、starved饥饿,与“hard day’s work”无直接对应。
答案D
解析“throw himself __ a hobby”投入爱好,throw oneself into为习语。
