Dear Club Members,
I am delighted to host our next club reading session and would like to recommend To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.
This classic novel, told through the eyes of young Scout Finch, explores justice, racial prejudice and moral courage in a small Southern town. Its vivid characters, accessible yet powerful language, and timeless themes of empathy and integrity are sure to provoke thoughtful discussion. The story also reminds us why literature matters in understanding society and ourselves.
I believe it will be both enjoyable and enlightening for all of us. Please join me in reading it.
Yours sincerely,
Li Ming

As is vividly depicted in the picture, several people are sitting around a table at what should be a lively gathering. Instead of chatting with one another, however, they all bury themselves in their smartphones, completely ignoring those around them. The caption “A Gathering in the Age of Mobile Phones” highlights this ironic scene.
The drawing intends to criticize the alienation caused by excessive mobile-phone use in modern social life. While technology was meant to connect people, it has paradoxically created invisible walls even among friends and family sitting face to face. Real conversation, eye contact and emotional exchange are being replaced by endless scrolling and virtual interaction.
In my view, we should not let phones dominate our gatherings. Setting phones aside during meals, practicing “phone-free” time and valuing face-to-face communication can restore genuine human connection. Only by using technology mindfully can we enjoy both digital convenience and authentic relationships.
While technology was meant to connect people, it has created...;Only by using technology mindfully can we...
