    Dear James Cook,

Welcome to our city! As a local student, I would like to recommend two tourist attractions that I believe you will enjoy.

The first is the Forbidden City, the world’s largest imperial palace complex. Its magnificent architecture and rich historical relics will give you a vivid insight into traditional Chinese culture.

The second is the Summer Palace. With its beautiful lakes, gardens and pavilions, it offers a peaceful atmosphere perfect for a relaxing walk after your busy academic schedule.

Both places are conveniently located and well worth a visit. I hope you have a pleasant stay.

    Yours sincerely,
    Li Ming

The two cartoons present a striking contrast in attitudes toward books. In the left picture, a man stands proudly before a huge bookcase filled with books, boasting, “I have so many books.” In the right picture, another man holds only a few books but declares, “I will try to finish reading twenty books this year.” The first emphasizes possession, while the second emphasizes actual reading.

The meaning is clear: collecting books is not the same as absorbing knowledge. Many people mistake ownership for learning, believing that the more books they possess, the more cultured they become. However, books left untouched on shelves cannot digest ideas into wisdom. Treating “having” as “having read” is a kind of self-comfort that gives a false sense of achievement.

In my view, the value of knowledge lies in digestion and application. Rather than stockpiling books, we should turn pages carefully and finish what we start. Only by reading and using what we learn can books truly enrich our minds.
