As is vividly shown in the picture, two courses are being selected at the same time. One is packed with new knowledge, innovation and challenges, yet students shy away from it and walk past. The other promises high grades, easy passing and little homework, so it is crowded with eager applicants. The contrast is striking: the demanding course is deserted, while the easy one is packed.
The phenomenon is easy to understand. It is human nature to avoid difficulty and seek convenience. However, if university life is reduced to chasing grades, students may miss the real training of critical thinking, problem solving and independent learning. A course that is hard but valuable can broaden horizons and build competence, whereas an easy course may only bring temporary satisfaction.
In my view, course selection is a value judgment rather than a simple comparison of workload. Short-term ease cannot be exchanged for long-term ability.
