The lake is home to about 90 islands, ranging in size from several square meters to several square kilometers. Taihu is renowned for its unique 'Taihu stones', which are commonly used to decorate traditional Chinese gardens. The lake is also famous for its highly productive fishing industry. Since the late 1970s, fishing for fish and crabs has been extremely important for residents along the lake and has made significant contributions to the economy of the surrounding areas. The Taihu region is one of the bases of China's ceramics industry, with Yixing's ceramic manufacturers producing the world-renowned Yixing purple sand teapots.
