In 1924 America’s National Research Council sent two engineers to supervise a series of experiments at a telephone-parts factory called the Hawthorne Plant near Chicago. It hoped they would learn how shop-floor lighting __1__ workers’ productivity. Instead, the studies ended __2__ giving their name to the “Hawthorne effect,” the extremely influential idea that the very __3__ of being experimented upon changed subjects’ behavior.

The idea arose because of the __4__ behavior of the women in the plant. According to __5__ of the experiments, their hourly output rose when lighting was increased, but also when it was dimmed. It did not __6__ what was done in the experiment; __7__ something was changed, productivity rose. A(n) __8__ that they were being experimented upon seemed to be __9__ to alter workers’ behavior __10__ itself.

After several decades, the same data were __11__ to econometric analysis. The Hawthorne experiments had another surprise in store. __12__ the descriptions on record, no systematic __13__ was found that levels of productivity were related to changes in lighting.

It turns out that the peculiar way of conducting the experiments may have led to __14__ interpretations of what happened. __15__ , lighting was always changed on a Sunday. When work started again on Monday, output __16__ rose compared with the previous Saturday and __17__ to rise for the next couple of days. __18__ , a comparison with data for weeks when there was no experimentation showed that output always went up on Mondays. Workers __19__ to be diligent for the first few days of the week in any case, before __20__ a plateau and then slackening off. This suggests that the alleged “Hawthorne effect” is hard to pin down.

    • A. affected
    • B. achieved
    • C. extracted
    • D. restored

    答案A

    • A. at
    • B. up
    • C. with
    • D. off

ended at/with/off 均无“结果变成”之意,不能接 giving their name。

    • A. truth
    • B. sight
    • C. act
    • D. proof

the very act of being experimented upon

    • A. controversial
    • B. perplexing
    • C. mischievous
    • D. ambiguous

    • A. requirements
    • B. explanations
    • C. accounts
    • D. assessments

    答案C

    解析according to accounts of the experiments 指“根据实验记述/记录”。

    • A. conclude
    • B. matter
    • C. indicate
    • D. work

    答案B

解析It did not matter what was done conclude、indicate、work 无法构成 it did not … what 这一惯用否定结构。

    • A. as far as
    • B. for fear that
    • C. in case that
    • D. so long as

    答案D

解析so long as something was changed 表示“只要有所改变”。 as far as 表程度,for fear that、in case that 表担心或以防,逻辑不符。

    • A. awareness
    • B. expectation
    • C. sentiment
    • D. illusion

    答案A

awareness 对应 being experimented upon 的知觉。

    • A. suitable
    • B. excessive
    • C. enough
    • D. abundant

    答案C

解析seemed to be enough to alter 表示“似乎就足以改变”。enough 后接 to do 表充分。

    • A. about
    • B. for
    • C. on
    • D. by

about/for/on itself

    • A. compared
    • B. shown
    • C. subjected
    • D. conveyed

    答案C

解析data were subjected to econometric analysis 表示“数据被拿去作计量分析”。be subjected to 为“经受、接受(处理)”。

    • A. Contrary to
    • B. Consistent with
    • C. Parallel with
    • D. Peculiar to

    答案A

Contrary to the descriptions Consistent with、Parallel with 表一致,Peculiar to 表特有,方向相反。

    • A. evidence
    • B. guidance
    • C. implication
    • D. source

    答案A

    解析no systematic evidence was found that …

    • A. disputable
    • B. enlightening
    • C. reliable
    • D. misleading

    • A. In contrast
    • B. For example
    • C. In consequence
    • D. As usual

    答案B

    解析lighting was always changed on a Sunday 是对“奇特做法”的举例。 In contrast、In consequence、As usual

    • A. duly
    • B. accidentally
    • C. unpredictably
    • D. suddenly

    答案A

    • A. failed
    • B. ceased
    • C. started
    • D. continued

continued 与 for the next couple of days 连贯。

    • A. Therefore
    • B. Furthermore
    • C. However
    • D. Meanwhile

    • A. attempted
    • B. tended
    • C. chose
    • D. intended

    答案B

解析工人 anyway 在每周前几天 tended to be diligent,属惯常倾向。

    • A. breaking
    • B. climbing
    • C. surpassing
    • D. hitting
