Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to translate a passage from Chinese into English. You should write your answer on Answer Sheet 2.

In traditional Chinese culture, exchanging gifts between relatives and friends is an important form of etiquette in interpersonal communication. Giving a gift is not merely a material offering, but also an expression of emotion and an essential bond that maintains interpersonal relationships. A carefully chosen gift that suits the recipient's preferences can often deepen the affection between both sides. Chinese people follow the tradition of mutually exchanging courtesies: when receiving a gift, they express their gratitude and give a gift in return at an appropriate time, so as to enhance the harmonious relationship between each other.

Recently it has been proposed that every university student should be required to participate in at least one research project before graduation. In my view, this proposal is both necessary and, with careful planning, largely practical.

As for its necessity, research training equips students with skills that ordinary coursework can hardly offer. By raising questions, collecting data and drawing conclusions, students learn to think critically and solve problems independently—qualities that any future career demands. Moreover, taking part in a real project helps them discover their own interests and prepares them for further study.

As for its practicality, the plan is workable as long as it is flexible. Universities could allow students to join existing projects led by professors or graduate students, rather than starting from scratch. A modest requirement, together with proper guidance and resources, would keep the workload reasonable.

In conclusion, requiring students to engage in one research project is a worthwhile idea. If well organized, it will benefit students without placing an unbearable burden on them.
